我的手机被偷了。

我的手机被偷了。
My phone was stolen.
wǒ de shǒu jī bèi tōu le

How it works

Receiver of action + 被 (bèi) + Verb + 了 (le).

  • 我的手机 (wǒ de shǒu jī): my phone
  • 被 (bèi): passive voice marker
  • 偷 (tōu): to steal

Passive voice with 被

The 被 (bèi) particle marks the passive voice, emphasizing an unfortunate event that happened to the subject (the phone). The doer of the action (the thief) is omitted here because their identity is unknown.

Change of state

Like in the previous phrase, 了 (le) indicates that the action is completed and a new, unfortunate state of affairs has been established.

Notes

A classic example of the passive voice using the 'bèi' structure to report a theft.
