When to use

How it works
The phrase combines a question about possibility with a request.
- هل يمكنك (hal yumkinuka): 'Can you' (addressing a male). `هل` (hal) is a question particle. `يمكنك` (yumkinuka) means 'it is possible for you'.
- أن (an): A particle used before a subjunctive verb.
- تريني (turiyani): 'show me'. This is the second-person masculine singular subjunctive form of the verb `أرى` (ara - to see/show), with the object pronoun `ني` (-ni) for 'me'.
- على (ala): 'on'.
- الخريطة (al-kharita): 'the map'.
Addressing Gender
The forms `يمكنك` (yumkinuka) and `تريني` (turiyani) are for addressing a male. To address a female, the short vowel on `ك` changes, and the verb form adapts. The feminine subjunctive drops the final nun after `أن`.
- To a male: هل يمكنكَ أن تريني على الخريطة؟ (hal yumkinuka an turiyani...)
- To a female: هل يمكنكِ أن تريني على الخريطة؟ (hal yumkinuki an turini...)
Dialectal Variation
A simpler, more common dialectal way to ask might be `فيك تورجيني عالخريطة؟` (fik turjini al-kharita?) in Levantine Arabic, or `ممكن توريني على الخريطة؟` (mumkin turrini al-kharita?) in Egyptian Arabic.
